AirDefense RogueWatch 3.0 Monitors Enterprise
Networks For Unsanctioned Wireless LANs
Real-time, 24x7 Monitoring Key to Detecting
Rogue Access Points, Ad Hoc Networks
ATLANTA, Ga. - March 10, 2003 - To combat the growing
problem of unsanctioned wireless LANs, AirDefense Inc. has launched
AirDefense RogueWatch 3.0 to provide real-time, 24x7 monitoring
of the airwaves to detect and identify all unauthorized wireless
LAN activity.
Driven by the desire for mobility and fueled by the decreasing
prices of wireless LAN hardware, employees, vendors and on-site
contractors can circumvent an enterprise's investment in IT security
by plugging a $100 wireless LAN access point into an Ethernet
jack and connecting a $50 wireless access card to a laptop or
hand-held device.
"Detecting rogue wireless LANs must be a top priority for security
conscious enterprises, irrespective of their plans to deploy wireless
technology," said Pete Lindstrom, a research director with Spire
Security. "With real-time monitoring of the airwaves, AirDefense
RogueWatch 3.0 offers a comprehensive approach to detect all unauthorized
wireless LANs, which includes rogue access points, ad hoc networks,
soft APs and accidental associations to neighboring networks."
As part of the AirDefense product family, AirDefense RogueWatch
3.0 is based on the patent-pending technologies that incorporate
distributed sensors and server appliances. The remote sensors
are deployed in areas that require protection from unauthorized
WLANs to monitor all wireless LAN activities 24x7. The sensors
communicate with the server appliance, which analyzes the traffic
and alerts network security managers to all unauthorized wireless
LANs.
"From our experiences with Blue Chip customers and large government
agencies, we have seen that more than 50 percent of enterprises
have unsanctioned wireless LANs," said Jay Chaudhry, CEO of AirDefense.
"All enterprises must first establish a policy and then monitor
24x7 for rogue wireless LANs."
Many enterprises have attempted to hunt down unauthorized wireless
LANs with wireless sniffers and scanners. However, physically
walking through office buildings, distribution centers and all
other enterprise facilities with a laptop or hand-held scanner
has proven to be incredibly costly and resource intensive for
enterprises with multiple locations. While sniffers and scanners
only provide a snapshot of network activity for a single moment,
AirDefense RogueWatch 3.0 provides the real-time detection of
all rogue wireless LANs that can only come from 24x7 monitoring
of the airwaves.
AirDefense launched the industry's first intrusion detection
system for 802.11 wireless LANs in June 2002. AirDefense provides
the ultimate security for wireless LANs with its patent-pending
technology for stateful monitoring and intrusion protection. AirDefense's
Multi-Dimensional Detection Engine analyzes threats to identify
security breaches based on: Signature analysis, policy compliance,
protocol assessment and statistically anomalous behavior. AirDefense
customers include Blue Chip enterprises, government agencies and
wireless LAN managed service providers.
