AirDefense to Monitor
Wireless LANs at June 25-27 802.11 Planet Conference & Expo
as Official 802.11 Security Provider
Wireless LAN security experts recommend
five easy steps to secure a user station while connecting to
conference wireless LAN or public hotspot
ATLANTA & Boston - June 24, 2003 - As part of an in-depth
study of wireless LANs, AirDefense Inc. has been selected as the
official 802.11 security provider for the June 25-27 802.11
Planet Conference & Expo in Boston. AirDefense will monitor
all wireless LAN activity and report on rogue WLANs, wireless
attacks, security vulnerabilities and performance issues.
AirDefense, the leader of 24x7 monitoring of wireless LANs, will
operate two wireless LAN monitoring centers at the 802.11 Planet
Conference & Expo in booths 403 and 838. The wireless LAN
monitoring centers will provide all attendees and exhibitors with
a real-time view of all WLAN activity. At the conclusion of the
conference, AirDefense will present its findings and report on:
- Rogue wireless LANs;
- Network scans;
- Fault diagnostics, traffic bottlenecks and other performance
issues;
- Attacks such as MAC spoofing, Denial-of-Service attacks, Man-in-the-Middle
attacks and identity thefts; and
- An overall vulnerability assessment of unencrypted traffic,
ad hoc networks, Soft APs and more.
"802.11 Planet chose AirDefense as the official wireless
LAN security provider because AirDefense offers the industry's
only mature solution for real-time wireless LAN monitoring,"
said Jay Chaudhry, chairman and CEO of AirDefense. "The first
step of security is to understand the risks. This study will provide
everyone with an understanding of an incredibly diverse and active
wireless LAN."
AirDefense solutions consist of distributed sensors and a server
appliance. The remote sensors monitor all wireless LAN activities
24x7 and communicate with the server appliance, which provides
scalable, centralized management for real-time rogue detection,
policy enforcement, intrusion protection and health monitoring
of the wireless LAN.
For conference attendees who plan on using the open-access wireless
LAN at the conference, AirDefense wireless LAN security experts
recommend that users take the following security precautions to
protect themselves while using the conference network or any public
hotspot:
- Turn off file and print sharing from your laptop;
- Clear your list of "preferred networks" for which
Windows XP actively probes and broadcasts your corporate and
home SSIDs;
- Turn off ad hoc networking and ensure that your wireless card
remains in "infrastructure only" mode;
- When using a VPN to connect back to an enterprise network,
disable split tunneling; and
- Utilize a personal firewall that detects malicious scanning
of your laptop.
As part of an educational effort, AirDefense employees will be
available at both wireless LAN monitoring stations to explain
the risks and threats that are identified at the conference.
